COMPETITION

The final choice of the winners to take part in the Carnegie Hall recital will be based solely on the recordings submitted. Accompaniment may be with piano, or orchestra.  Performances of live productions may also be included, but only in the DVD format, and not as an audio performance only.

REPERTOIRE/COMPETITION RULES

Repertoire for the BAIVC may be songs and/or arias from the standard classical repertoire, and may be chosen from literature of the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic, and/or Contemporary eras.  Applicants may choose to submit a program that combines songs and/or arias from any period and/or composer as well as sacred works for Oratorio.

The total performance time for all submissions must not exceed twenty-five minutes in length.  In other words, a recording may be less than the twenty-five minute time limit, but must not go over it.

All performances must be done with the appropriate piano or orchestral accompaniment.  A cappella renditions of pieces normally sung with accompaniment will not be considered.

Contestants are judged on the following: quality of voice, musicality, technique, diction, and artistic interpretation.  These attributes are looked at both individually and collectively by the judges, but the goal of BAIVC is to choose singers capable of giving intelligent, thought-provoking, and inspiring performances that reflect the singer’s own understanding of the works.
